Roll and Run

Three people in silhouette, in a press up position inline with a ball rolling under them.

Could have sworn this was already listed as a one of the relays on this site. I’ll amend if I do find it duplicated.

A simple, but fun relay race that also helps build up core strength.

Each team has a ball. Can be something basketball or football sized, but you may find something tennis ball sized works better for you.

To start, each player in the team, except the one who holds the ball, helps to form a tunnel by lining up side by side, relatively close together, with hands and feet on the ground, so that players’ bodies leave a gap under them for the ball to pass under. The position is similar to a press up, or the beginning of doing squats, but players are allowed to bend their backs.

On the signal to start, the person with the ball starts at the back and rolls the ball gently through the tunnel, created by the bodies, while they themselves run around the outside of the tunnel to grab the ball as it emerges from the front of the tunnel. If players roll too hard, they will find that they will have to spend time retrieving the ball. And if they don’t roll it hard enough, they will find themselves having to retrieve the ball from within the tunnel of bodies.

When the player gets the ball, they roll it back through the tunnel to the player at the back (nearest the start line), while they themselves take up the push-up pose and create the next section of the tunnel. The player at the back now repeats the process. Rolling the ball through the tunnel, running to the front, stopping the ball, rolling it to the back and taking up the position in the front.

Repeat until the first team to reach the finish line wins.

Seen being promoted by Betti Brandner, volleyball coach.
