Home Age - Adult Hoop run relay
2 teams equal number of hoops in line in front of them, with cone at the end.

This is a relay race suggested by @bettii_brandner, which is good for warming up as it involves short sprints. Name given to it here is just to distinguish it from other games, but if you know this relay race by another name please let us know.

Equipment:

  • Equal number of hoops (hula-hoop type) for each team, ideally at least one hoop per player or more.
  • Cone to mark the end of the course for each team.

Layout shows two teams facing each other, but you can just as easily have them side by side and have more than two teams. Or even have a single end target with all teams placed like spokes on a wheel around it. This relay race also lends itself well to using any type of object that can be picked up and placed somewhere. Eg small beanbags (the throwing/juggling type), balls, paper crumpled into balls, shoes, towels, cloths, clothing… Just need to make sure things are even between teams. Target-wise in this the aim is to place the hoop over the cone, but again any suitable receptacle could work, eg a bucket to drop/place the objects in.

The race is simple in that the first player picks up the nearest hoop, runs with it to the end of the line, places it over the cone and then runs back to the beginning to tag the next player in line to start, who grabs the next hoop and repeats. First team with all their hoops over the cone and also all standing or sitting behind their start line wins.

If you want a version that involves a bit less running, you could consider turning this into a throwing relay. Players rather than running with the hoop to the cone, have to throw it and try and get it over the cone as in the game of hoopla. If they miss they have to retrieve the hoop and keep trying until they succeed. If you like this idea you might like beanbag toss which appears to be a favourite for KS2 sports days.
