One of those very old traditional games, but very simple and popular, particularly as a travel game, for any number of players of two or more.
First player chooses an object/item they can see from where they are. If being played while travelling/moving it is important the person picks an item that will be visible for some time. When they have chosen an item the player says, “I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with ….” and then says the first letter of the object they have chosen. A clue can then be given at this stage as to what the object is such as general location (e.g. if playing while travelling in a car the comment could be whether it is inside or outside the car). Decide if the other players randomly or take it in turns to guess what the object is. The player guessing the right answer becomes the next person to choose an object.
For younger players still learning to spell, you might want to make it that they can pronounce the first sound (be that ‘f’ or ‘ph’ for instance). Eg “”I spy with my little eye, something that starts with the sound …. “
The other way to make it easier for younger players is to get them to state it’s colour eg “I spy with my little eye, something that is blue”.
Don’t let this game go on for too long…
