Dragon Boat racing is an international sport using very long narrow canoe like boats about 11.5 – 12.5 metres long taking a team of 20 paddlers, 1 drummer and 1 steersman. However, traditional ones that are used for ceremonies or festivals can be much longer, measuring over 33m.
In Nan Boat Skating, skateboards are used instead of boats and each is crewed by a single person. You’ll also need a long straight stretch of solid ground (eg tarmac/asphalt ) which will allow the skateboards to move freely. You can also probably hold this in a sports hall if there’s enough space.
Having markers (cones/poles) down the course, may be help the individual contestants stay on course.
If you want to make the skateboards look more fancy as they have done in example we saw, you can add decorative extensions to the front and back to give the skateboards long bows and sterns.
Paddlers sit on the skateboards facing direction they intend to travel and instead of a bladed paddle, use short poles to propel themselves. These are about the same length as a paddle handle, but with a large rubber tip to aid in gripping the ground and a T bar at the top.
Standard skateboard safety equipment is recommended.
