This is a piece that will probably be added to and updated over time as we watch the evolution of AI.

With the rapid profusion of AI, it was almost inevitable that we would start to see AI generated games suggestions, such as those posted on Facebook by Recriando Jogos e Brincadeira (Recreating Games and Play Activities) https://www.facebook.com/recriandojogosebrincadeiras. And it does raise some interesting questions such as how unique are the games? and how playable are they?

A central tenant to how AI works, is the basis of modelling from real life examples. Being fed lots of different types of games and then from that seeing the trends in the materials its been provided with. However, many games on the web at the moment are incomplete in their details and even with a video, some of the implicit rules of the game are not there, eg how much space you need, what type of ball, minimum number of players and possible maximums. To properly describe the game you have to have a good understanding of how games actually work.

Asking AI to describe how to play a known game like ‘Simon Says’, is probably safe as it’s just repeating the known rules. We would however be interested to hear of any cases where AI is inaccurate in describing the rules of a known game. AI can however appear to come unstuck at times eg “Derruba Colete – Handebol” (Dropping a Vest – Handball) which is labelled as AI content and its not certain whether this is an original game generated by AI or replicating the rules of a known game. In this particular case the image supplied (replicated below) is unhelpful as it only shows one team throwing, but knocking down the vests of the other team and the other team collecting these, which does not fit the game description.

There’s also issues such as how do you hang the vests up? There’s no mention of clothes pegs in the game description, but they are used in the image, although apparently holding onto thin air. The use of pegs is logical, but are you meant to use one or two pegs… and for anybody who’s hung up clothing before, there are different techniques and types of peg. All of which is relevant for how easy it will be for a shirt to be knocked from the grip of it’s peg. And it’s that sort of detail that AI does not think of.
