Game play is a simplified version of volleyball, but as only the basic rules and concept are provided in the write up supplied by Recriando Jogos e Brincadeiras, there is a fair amount of room for adjusting the game rules and equipment to suit your players.
Equipment
A “light ball” is suggested which many young players will find easier to handle, but older players are likely to prefer to play with a harder ball like a football or volleyball as this increases the speed and competitiveness of the game.
Similar to volleyball, you’ll need a court divided by a net. The height of the net in ‘Switch’ is “a low net”, but the graphic shows a higher net being used, that’s above head height. You might find it easier to use a low net, similar to tennis (0.91-1.07m above the ground) for younger players, but a higher one which is more of challenge, for older players. Volleyball nets are 2.43m above the ground for men and 2.24m for women.

Play
Play in teams of 4, one team each side of the net.
Unlike volleyball each team ‘has’ to pass the ball between them 3 times without touching the ground, before shouting ‘Switch’ (‘Cambio’) and sending the ball over the net to the other teams side, to try and land it within that teams court area. The other team has to stop the ball touching ground on their side, and then pass between them 3 times before sending it back over the net.
There is no mention whether players can catch a ball and then pass it on, or if players are only allowed to touch the ball. It is suggested here you adapt the catching, touch and blocking rules to suit your preferred style of play. For instance if you want to practice certain skills, as well as the age, skill and dexterity of the players.
Players when they have ball must remain in place, cannot walk or run, and must pass the ball to a team mate, or to the other team if they are the 4th to throw.
Points are scored when:
- A team scores a point when the ball is sent into the other teams area and the other team fail to stop it touching the ground.
- If a team drops a ball when passing between themselves, the other team gets a point.
- If the ball hits the net and does not cross when being passed between teams, the opposing team (receiving team) gets a point.
- If the ball when sent into the opposition area is not stopped, but touches outside of that teams court area, the opposition gets the point.
It’s suggested play continues until a team gets 10 or 15 points.
